Many thanks to all the visitors to Highdown Gardens who have made donations during the year.
A total of over £4,000 this year has been donated through our post-box at the entrance to the gardens.
All donations are kept in a separate budget to be spent only within the gardens. The balance of any donations is carried over into the budget for the following year.
Our general maintenance budgets fund the yearly maintenance of the gardens, but with the additional funds from the donations, we are able to purchase many new plants and bulbs for the collection.
We have taken the opportunity this year with such generous donations, to replace the wire fencing around the Bamboo pond with powder-coated, galvanised steel fencing. As safety issues become increasingly important, especially with visitor numbers on the rise, this was something that was deemed very necessary.
We have also used the donations to fund the purchase of new roses. In particular, we have bought two climbers, Rosa “Shropshire Lad” which have been planted at the base of obelisks, within the Rose Garden.
Wide selections of bulbs including Fritillaria, Leucojum, Allium and Erythronium have been purchased as have cyclamen corms.
We have purchased our annual supply of Narcissi and Tulips. Highdown Gardens is especially loved for it’s display of spring bulbs.
The donations have also been used for the purchase of several new herbaceous plants, such as Echinacea, Scabiosa and Anemone Multifida. The latter is something we have not tried before in the Gardens, and, along with Scabiosa ochroleuca, should be quite interesting to see.
Once again, many thanks from Worthing Borough Council for all your donations. These help to sustain and improve your gardens at Highdown, which give so much pleasure to so many visitors.
